On March 25, 2018 at 6:48 pm, Morganton Public Safety Officers responded to 607 Valdese Ave Apt. B-307 in reference to a deceased person.  When officers arrived they found fifty-seven-year- old, Hubert Roland Hunter Jr. deceased inside the residence.

Hunter‘s body was found lying in the hallway with trauma to the face and neck.  Evidence suggested a struggle in the residence and Hunter was the victim of a homicide.  Investigators with the Morganton Department of Public Safety and the State Bureau of Investigations executed a search warrant on the victim’s apartment, interviewed multiple residents within the complex and search around the buildings.

As the investigation developed, bloody clothes and a knife were found in a dumpster near the apartment.  Information from interviews led investigators to speak to a neighbor, Darius Heasley King, who was known to have disagreements with the victim.

An additional search warrant executed on Mr. King’s residence revealed evidence of the crime. King lives at 607 Valdese Ave, Apt. B-305 which is directly across the hall from the victim.

In the earlier morning hours of March 25th, the two men disputed over money which resulted in the death of Mr. Hunter.

King was arrested on March 27, 2018, and charged with one count of murder.  He has a first appearance court date on March 28, 2018 and was placed in the Burke Catawba Detention Facility under no bond.
